Every year since the mid-1940’s when the men came home from ‘the war’ the family has had a gathering of family and friends for a reading of the Preamble of the Declaration of Independance.
Truly a remarkable document it was had different meanings and impact at each reading : the 1960’s with the turmoil of assassination, war, leading to the 1970’s and corruption and healing, to the excesses of the 80’s and 90’s to today with the economic worries, but nothing that compare to have a family member– My daughter– serving her country overseas in yet another war that appears has a long time before being resolved.
Dad led with the preamble, and 5 of us read the grievences presented in 1776. It was a hard read, and harder with the knowlege that Morgan still has 5 more months in Iraq.
